Rio de Janeiro TWC 2014 - SICOT Diploma Examination

Namunguba Mbute and Qasim Ajmi were granted the German SICOT Fellowships, which offer them the opportunity to visit well-known German orthopaedic centres for a period of four weeks. The fellowship is kindly provided by the German Section of SICOT.

The 12th SICOT Diploma Examination took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in November 2014 and consisted of a written part and an oral part.

The written part comprised 100 multiple choice questions and lasted two hours. The subjects questioned were in the following categories:

  • General Orthopaedics

  • Trauma

  • Paediatrics

  • Pathology

  • Sports Medicine

  • Hand

  • Basic Sciences

The oral part, also lasting two hours, was held on the same day. Each candidate was examined by two examiners in each of the four major subjects:

  • Adult Orthopaedics and Pathology (30 minutes)

  • Trauma (30 minutes)

  • Paediatrics and Hand (30 minutes)

  • Basic Sciences (30 minutes)


Eligibility requirements

The SICOT Diploma Examination is aimed at young orthopaedic surgeons in training. To be eligible, candidates must have:

  • registered online;

  • provided their CV;

  • provided a letter from their Head of Department specifying that they had 4 years of medical practice since obtaining their medical degree and that they were actively engaged in an orthopaedic training programme;

  • been members of SICOT or in the process of applying for membership at the time of registration and their 2014 membership dues must have been paid. For more information about SICOT membership application, please click here.

A judging panel reviewed all applications and reserved the right to refuse any application. The number of places available was limited to 24. Candidates who were on the waiting list for the Hyderabad exam should have reapplied for the Rio de Janeiro exam.

IMPORTANT: A candidate was only considered eligible once he/she had registered online and the SICOT Head Office had received (at [email protected]) his/her CV, Head of Department's letter, SICOT membership application form (unless already a SICOT member) and full payment of the 2014 membership fee before 24 March 2014. Please note that an email confirming receipt of your application was not sent.

Registration opened on 17 January 2014.

Application and registration deadline: 24 March 2014

Notification of selection: 28 April 2014


Only the 24 selected candidates were asked to pay the registration fee at a later date. The registration fee for the exam did NOT include registration for the Rio de Janeiro Congress.

Cancellation policy

  • Cancellations received from 1 July 2014 to 15 July 2014 will secure a refund of 70% of the total amount paid.

  • Cancellations received from 16 July 2014 to 30 July 2014 will secure a refund of 50% of the total amount paid.

  • No refund will be made under any circumstances for cancellations received on or after 1 July 2014. This includes cancellations made due to visa refusal. Candidates are therefore advised to start the visa application process well in advance.

  • Postponing the exam to the following year is only allowed once and on a case-by-case basis. The deadline for postponements was 1 September 2014.
